INTERTEC is reaching for the stars! ✨🌌 Recently, two of our shelters have been installed on the highest altitude ever for INTERTEC equipment: on the Chajnantor plateau in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile at 5000m above sea level.
Chajnantor has one of the most extreme desert climates in the world. But it is no challenge for our shelters, which are compatible with the ambient air pressure of merely 550 mbar. They are exposed to a temperature range of -30°C to +40°C and a wind speed of up to 65 m/s.
The shelters serve to protect a Digital Radio System DRSS which expands the communication coverage of the Atacama Large Millimeter/Sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) on the plateau. ALMA is a submillimeter wave interferometer, a revolutionary astronomical telescope, consisting of 66 antennas. The DRS is powered solely by solar and wind energy.
